BWA Yachting introduces Yacht Carbon Offset option
BWA Yachting introduces Yacht Carbon Offset option
MYBA Charter Show - Genoa, Italy, May 6, 2010 - BWA Yachting, worldwide leader in concierge and marine agency services to the superyacht industry, has introduced a new option for yachts who wish to offset their carbon footprint. Through preferred partners Yacht Carbon Offset, carbon emissions of the yacht's engines can be balanced with equivalent greenhouse gas savings from independently audited projects around the world.
BWA Yachting and Yacht Carbon Offset both focus on meeting the particular demands of those that own and enjoy superyachts. Reassurance that carbon emissions have been effectively balanced is a natural requirement for many such individuals. Moreover, pragmatic action to deal with greenhouse gases is an important element of environmental management.
Stefano Tositti CEO of BWA Yachting said today, "It makes perfect sense to provide carbon offsetting through our seamless and integrated yacht support system. We have selected Yacht Carbon Offset as our preferred partner, recognising their focus on the requirements of superyacht clients, and their Lloyds Register Quality Assurance Certification."
Yacht Carbon Offset's Managing Director Mark Robinson commented, "An increasing number of leading yachts now carbon offset their fuel, either as standard procedure or for individual charters. We are always looking for ways to make this as convenient as possible. BWA Yachting are set up to provide comprehensive logistics and concierge support to captains and crews, and arranging the Carbon Offset can be a natural part of this. We are delighted to be partnering with the BWA team across their extensive network in the Mediterranean and beyond."
For more information on how the carbon footprint of your yacht can be offset, and for summaries of the greenhouse gas reduction projects that are used to achieve the balancing carbon savings, please visit www.yachtcarbonoffset.com or contact BWA Yachting at info@bwayachting.com.

MYBA Charter Show 2010 offsets carbon emissions
MYBA Charter Show 2010 offsets carbon emissions
Conscious of the environmental impact of its annual Charter Show, MYBA has decided to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions from its 2010 event, which will take place in Genoa from May 3rd – 7th.
MYBA has chosen once again to work with Yacht Carbon Offset, following the success of the partnership during the MYBA Selection in the South of France last September. Carbon savings from one of Yacht Carbon Offset's selected projects, in Nicaragua, have been allocated to match the estimated carbon emissions from electricity consumption at the event.
Fiona Maureso, Chair of the MYBA Charter Show Committee, said: " The MYBA Show is dedicated to charter professionals and provides a showcase for the finest superyachts on the charter market today. However, we are increasingly aware that the event does create a carbon footprint and we are pleased to be working with Yacht Carbon Offset to reduce its impact. We have chosen Yacht Carbon Offset as they provide a specialist service for the superyacht industry and have Lloyds Register Quality Assurance Certification".
Yacht Carbon Offset's Managing Director Mark Robinson commented: " We are delighted to be participating at the forthcoming MYBA Show and look forward to raising awareness of our specialist service during this important event. Carbon offsetting appeals to many high profile charter clients and can easily be included in the arrangements of a luxury charter. We thank the MYBA team once again for their support."

Monaco Marine & Yacht Carbon Offset
Monaco Marine invites Superyacht Clients to Carbon Offset shore power.
Monaco Marine – Press Release
Monaco Marine, as part of its continuing emphasis on improved environmental practice, has decided to act to compensate the carbon emissions in its La Ciotat shipyard, through Yacht Carbon Offset. The Shipyard now invites all superyacht clients to Carbon Offset the electricity used during their time in the yard through a small contribution.
Monaco Marine will itself Carbon Offset a corresponding amount of electricity used for its activities and operations at the shipyard.
Michel Ducros, President of Monaco Marine said: "One of our guiding principles is respect for the environment; our ISO 14001 Certification in La Ciotat is a proof of our commitment that we share in all our shipyards. Building on our strategy of continually striving to improve waste management and overall environmental performance, the issue of greenhouse gases is clearly on our agenda. Working with our Clients on a voluntary basis, we see Carbon Offsetting as a pragmatic action that we can introduce immediately. We are pleased to be working with Yacht Carbon Offset to bring this option to our customers and to have the opportunity to widen awareness of effective carbon offsetting amongst yachts of all sizes."
Yacht Carbon Offset's Managing Director Mark Robinson commented: "We are delighted to be partnering with Monaco Marine, in an action that demonstrates the Company's commitment to continuous environmental improvement, and which is in tune with the increasing focus on carbon emissions in the yachting industry."

Marina Barcelona 92 & Yacht Carbon Offset
"MB'92, Leading the Way in Yard Carbon Offset"
Download high resolution photo of MB'92 shipyard here.
Since February 2009 MB´92 has been leading the way in carbon offsetting in superyacht refit yards. Clients have been offered the option to participate in compensating the carbon emissions from their consumed shore power. The shipyard itself has then matched its clients offset by purchasing a same amount of offsets.
Up to the end of 2009 this has lead to an offset amount of almost 2 million kWh of electricity. To have an idea of the amount, this is the equivalent of the carbon emissions generated by modern European car doing almost 5 million kilometres on the road (!). The amount also represents a major part of the total electricity consumption of the shipyard.
So, how does it work? If the yacht decides to participate, MB´92 will charge a small amount on the yacht's metered electricity consumption whilst in the yard. The total amount for the Carbon Offset will be invoiced alongside the cost of the electricity itself. The consumption details and yacht particulars are then communicated to the Carbon Offset partner, Yacht Carbon Offset. They will then issue a personalised Certificate for the yacht upon departure. Then, twice a year MB´92 will match the actions of its clients for that half year period by carbon offsetting the same total quantity of electricity again, to compensate for its office and other yard energy consumptions.
The funds of the purchased offsets are used to support independently verified emissions reduction projects, such as renewable energy projects, so that each tonne of CO2 emissions from the yacht's shore power is balanced by an equivalent tonne of atmospheric CO2 reductions from the project. For each project selected by Yacht Carbon Offset, independent reputable organisations such as TÜV, Lloyds Register, etc. verify that carbon savings are properly quantified and monitored, and that the projects could not have taken place without the funding support from the Offsets. Its Lloyds Register Quality Assurance Certification to ISO 9001 ensures that the Carbon Offsetting process is fully certified.

Yacht Carbon Offset for UK charity, the Sea-Change Sailing Trust
The Sea-Change Sailing Trust is a UK charity which provides activity-based learning for young people and vulnerable adults using the vehicle of a traditional sailing vessel, a Thames sailing barge. By living and working together aboard the vessel they participate in a wide range of life skills and are encouraged to take increasing responsibility for their contribution and group decisions.
Sea-Change has decided to balance the carbon footprint of its vessel operations. Yacht Carbon Offset is pleased to provide this as a donation in kind. The equivalent carbon emissions reductions are achieved by independently verified green energy projects, and the effectiveness of the action is underpinned by Yacht Carbon Offset's Lloyds Register Quality Assurance Certification.
Richard Titchener, of Sea-Change said: "We have been watching the development of carbon emissions trading in the maritime sector for some time and welcome the opportunity to take action for our own operations. We are fundraising for a new vessel to replace the one we currently hire. The new vessel will carry cargo with very low emissions; a positive attribute that we hope will further raise the profile of the Trust's work in the years to come."
Yacht Carbon Offset's Managing Director Mark Robinson commented: "We applaud the work of the Sea-Change Sailing Trust, putting these wonderful traditional vessels to work in a way that makes a real difference for participants. We are delighted to provide their Carbon Offset, and wish them well with their ongoing plans."

V S Y Viareggio Superyachts Carbon Offsets the sea trials of RoMa
Sea trials have started for RoMa, the second 62m vessel from V S Y Viareggio Superyachts. The yacht has been designed to have the highest standards of environmental performance and energy efficiency, and to meet the exacting standards of the RINA "Green Star Gold Plus" class notation and ABS ES.
Now, V S Y has acted to Carbon Offset the greenhouse gas emissions from the fuel that will be used during RoMa's sea trials in the coming weeks – though this will be relatively modest for a yacht of this size due to the efficiency of her design.
These emissions will be balanced by equivalent greenhouse gas savings achieved by green energy projects, through Yacht Carbon Offset.
Federico Bennewitz, General Manager of V S Y said ' As a company, we have taken up the challenge of building superyachts to the highest environmental standards. RoMa and her sister ships show just what can be achieved with state-of-the-art technology and innovative design. And in our own operations, we are always looking for new ways to minimise our impact on the environment. So for V S Y, working with Yacht Carbon Offset is completely
in tune with our business priorities.'
Yacht Carbon Offset's Managing Director Mark Robinson commented: ' The efficiency of RoMa's design, and the stringent Class Notation to which she has been designed and built, underlines V S Y's commitment to leadership in all aspects of environmental performance. We are delighted to be working with V S Y Viareggio Superyachts to balance the greenhouse gas emissions that will arise during RoMa's sea trials.'

Curvelle takes a lead in green construction
Luxury yacht builder Curvelle has Carbon Offset the energy that will be used to build its yachts – including an allowance for design and commercial development activity from 2009. The Curvelle 33x9 yachts already show considerable energy savings due to their efficient, innovative design, and today's announcement underlines Curvelle's commitment to achieving optimal environmental performance across the board.
The quantity of electricity that will be used during construction of each yacht has been estimated by the Curvelle team. The greenhouse gas emissions due to this energy use have been calculated by the specialists at Yacht Carbon Offset, and balanced by equivalent emissions reductions from independently validated green energy projects.
Following launch, the carbon emissions "per week of yachting pleasure" will be minimised both by Curvelle's efficiency of design, and through the fractional ownership structure that maximises productive use of the vessel. Arrangements to balance these operational carbon emissions will be developed in due course.
Curvelle's Director Luuk V. van Zanten said: " A major factor in selecting a catamaran design for the Curvelle 33X9 was efficiency. Over and above the huge advantages of space and stability, the twin hull configuration achieves a substantial 30% greater fuel efficiency than equivalent monohulls of similar performance. So the overall greenhouse gas emissions from our yachts during operation will be far less than the equivalent monohull design superyachts.
We have also recognised that the energy used during construction contributes to the "carbon footprint" of the yacht over its lifetime. So as part of our commitment to environmental responsibility, we have decided to be proactive. By Offsetting carbon emissions even before launch, we provide our owners with the satisfaction that Curvelle yachts offer unrivalled environmental performance both on the water and during construction. For us, it is a matter of leadership, and we are pleased to be working with the specialists at Yacht Carbon Offset to put this leadership into action."
Yacht Carbon Offset's Mark Robinson added: " To our knowledge, Curvelle's action is the first example of Carbon Offsetting the energy used in the construction of a superyacht, - as such it is a real milestone. This decision is a practical and effective response to the growing focus on environmental performance across the superyacht industry. We are delighted to be working with Curvelle on their innovative project and to show that action on superyacht carbon emissions can begin even before the vessel enters the water."

Marina Barcelona 92 & Yacht Carbon Offset – Press Release
MB'92 has introduced Carbon Offseting, to balance greenhouse gas emissions from its Superyacht refit and repair operations.
Marina Barcelona 92 (MB'92), as part of its commitment to environmental best practice, has decided to act to compensate for the carbon emissions from use of energy at the shipyard in Barcelona.
With immediate effect, visiting yachts will be invited to contribute a small amount to Carbon Offset the shore power consumed during their stay. MB'92 will itself match this action by Offseting an equivalent quantity of electricity used for other activities and operations at the site.
Pepe Garcia-Aubert, MB92's General Manager said " At MB'92, we are committed to continuous improvement in all aspects of our service and operations – and environmental performance is a key part of this. We recognise that energy use here at the shipyard contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, and have decided to do something pro-active in response. Working together with our clients and with the specialists at Yacht Carbon Offset, we start today, with effective action to balance our use of electricity. With our initiative we also hope to create an increased environmental awareness amongst yacht crew, managers and even Owners"
For each individual yacht, and for MB'92 itself, Yacht Carbon Offset will certify that greenhouse gas emissions arising from the corresponding quantities of electricity are balanced by emissions savings elsewhere – through green energy projects, for example.
